Freeplay Adjustment



Freeplay adjustment for lever type clutches.

Clutches that use a mechanical release system must maintain the correct clutch system freeplay adjustment for correct operation and service life.

 

Chevrolet and General Motors trucks 1973 to 1984 with mechanical release systems:

  1. Temporarily remove the clutch fork return spring, reattach after adjustment.
  2. Loosen the locknut on the pushrod.
  3. Adjust the rod length so that the linkage swivel slips into the adjustment hole. The adjustment hole is above and slightly closer to the release fork than the pushrod actuation hole.
  4. Increase the length of the pushrod until all play is removed from the linkage.
  5. Tighten the locknut without changing the adjustment rod length.
  6. Remove the swivel from the adjustment hole and insert it into the actuation hole, replace washer and secure with a new cotter pin.
  7. The clutch pedal freeplay should be 1 3/8" to 1 5/8". 

Chevrolet and General Motors trucks 1965 to 1972 with mechanical release systems.

  1. Temporarily remove the clutch fork return spring, reattach after adjustment.
  2. Loosen the front pushrod locknut at the linkage swivel.
  3. Push the rod to the rear, the bearing will contact the release levers.
  4. Adjust the rear locknut for 1/4" clearnace to the linkage swivel.
  5. Release the pushrod, maintain the rear locknut position, and tighten the front locknut against the linkage swivel. 
  6. The clutch pedal freeplay should be 3/4" to 1".

Clutches that use a mechanical release system must maintain the correct clutch system freeplay adjustment for correct operation and service life. 

  1. Adjust the pushrod for 1 1/2" clutch pedal freeplay.

Freeplay adjustment for applications not detailed above.

  1. Adjust the pushrod for 1 1/2" clutch pedal freeplay.
